The Schaalsee biosphere reserve is not a connected, large nature reserve (NSG). Only parts of the area are protected as nature reserves. Most of the area is designated as a landscape conservation area.

The development zone covers 19,994 ha (64.5 % ) of the biosphere reserve's area. It is the economic and recreational area in which environmentally compatible regional development is a priority. The development zone is designated as a landscape conservation area.

The care zone covers 9,257 ha (29.9 %) of the biosphere reserve's area. It protects particularly valuable areas of the cultural landscape, which are to be preserved or developed through careful use of land. These areas are for the most part designated as nature reserves.

The core zone covers 1,749 ha (5.6 %) of the biosphere reserve's area. Here, the focus is on the development of nature without human influence; this is where wilderness is created. Core zones are mostly located within nature reserves.  (All data as of 2020)
